The Bamboo Story ...By Founder: Stuart Russell
I'm often asked by people why I named the company "Bamboo Consulting" ?
To paint the scene; I'm sitting on my balcony looking out at the amazing view of Dee Why Beach and thinking how can I collate all the things my customers want and create a name that signifies this?
- We want HIGH GROWTH
- We want RESILIENCE in our people
- We want ADAPTABILITY to change
- We want a SOLID FOUNDATION
In my teenage years I was determined in the pursuit of my dream to become a professional football player: or soccer if you're reading this in Australia or US ! And I had to make a few sacrifices, especially as a young man. One thing I missed when travelling across the country every weekend or occasionally internationally was companionship; whilst my friends were generally enjoying being teenagers I would be either training or playing a match somewhere.
We're going back in the days before social media and if you had a mobile phone you were definitely doing very well for yourself and had a very large pocket for it! I spent time thinking about what could I nurture that would provide a bit of companionship for me, and as pets would be unfair because they would be alone for some time, I thought about having a pot plant as that would be low maintenance.
I thought this was a great idea until I discovered a lot of plants also need a lot of nurturing and care as I went through various varieties. Moving around from place to place I decided to stop because I just wasn't able to look after them properly.
Then one day my friend suggested I could either get a Cactus or Bamboo plant because he'd seen on the TV they were pretty resilient and didn't need a lot of care and could still thrive in harsh environments....And he was right. I chose a Bamboo plant because I thought it looked nicer and I'm also a big Kung Fu fan.
Now I'll bring you back to the Balcony !
I was out of ideas and pretty despondent so I came in doors and sat on the sofa; staring at the wall, giving myself a hard time because I spend all day being creative for clients but can't even name my own business ! Then, with a deep sigh my eyes focused away from the wall to what was on my desk staring at me the whole time...My Bamboo Plant !!
I thought about all the journeys we'd taken, environments lived in and waterings I'd forgotten but there it was still going strong.
So there you have it, high growth focused organisations and their people could learn a lot from being like the Bamboo Plant.
"Bamboo shows great strength in turbulent conditions. In weather storms, bamboo will sway, bend and flex but then regain its form and stand tall, whilst it's competitors remain rigid, snap and fall. Now that's adaptability and resilience in an unforgiving climate”...
